Businessman, Philantropist. Amado emigrated to the United States from Turkey in 1903 where he settled in New York. He was in the tobacco trade business, at first working for Standard Commercial Tobacco Company until he left to work for himself. With the proceeds from his profits in the tobacco business he became a successful financier and investor and moved to Los Angeles in 1940. In 1961, he established the Maurice Amado Foundation to encourage the development of Sephardic Studies as both an independent field of study and research and as part of the larger world of Jewish culture and civilization. The sanctuary at Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel was built with funds from the Maurice Amado Foundation and the temple's social hall is named in his honor.
