May 24th ~

Birthday wishes, sent to Heaven from your family below. We miss you and love you dearly and we wanted you to know. Your birthday's not forgotten and your memory lives on. We celebrate the life you had even though you've gone. If we were given just one wish, one that would come true, We'd wish you back beside us to spend this day with you. We will always love and miss you and will often shed a tear; Especially on your special day year after year. ~ Anon.

My dad was the youngest of three sons born to Dr. Joseph Samuel Rickard and Sarah Pearl Leavitt Rickard. He had one half-brother, Samuel Leroy Rickard, from his father's marriage to Mary Poston. Another half-brother Clarence Rickard, was born from the marriage of his father and Ella Richardson.

He joined the navy in 1939. He became a Chief Petty Officer, and a pilot. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received at Tarawa.

He met my mother while she was working in a dress shop his mother often frequented. They were later married on December 8, 1950 in Long Beach, California. They had one daughter who they named after one of his aunts and a cousin who died when he was two.

I've recently found out through a family member that Dad enjoyed gardening, and that he also played the violin and guitar. He also wrote poetry, a sample of which is found on My Mom's memorial page.

They divorced in 1954.

Dad died of lung cancer at the age of 53.

I wish I could have spent more time with you Dad, and gotten to know you better. At least you got to see your grandchildren. I love you, and will always remember our brief time together.

I Want You To Know

A brief moment of darkness
was all that I knew,
before Heaven's Gate
came into my view.

Loved ones and friends
I had missed for many years,
welcomed me with open arms
and many happy tears.

All the hurt, fear and pain
that I have ever known,
is gone from my life,
I am finally home.

I gazed upon the Lord's
sweet smiling face,
and for the first time in my life
I knew and felt His grace.

I know that you miss me,
but please dry your eyes.
I will always be watching and loving you
from my home in the sky.

A cool breeze on your face,
a touch of light rain,
I will send as a reminder
that we will be reunited again.

Life on earth is but one
brief moment in time,
I am finally home,
Eternity is mine. ~ Angela
