During World War I he served with the Centerville Co. D, 168th Infantry which was a part of the famous Rainbow division and saw considerable action in France. Following the war he was in the restaurant business in Moravia and continued to be active in the National Guard Company at Centerville.

During World War II he was called from the reserves to active duty with the United States Army and reported for duty at Ft, Oglethorpe, GA. He was assigned to Co. B, 2nd Refresher Class, for a few weeks of intensive training.
