A cadet at West Point Military Academy from July 1, 1833 until July 1, 1837, when he graduated and was promoted to Second Lieut., 2d. Dragoons. He served in the Florida War against the Seminole Indians (1837-39), and was made First Lieut. of the 2d. Dragoons on Dec. 1, 1838. He served on recruiting service from 1839 until 1840, when he was dismissed on Feb. 17, 1840 for habitual drunkenness. He then worked as a school teacher in Covington from 1840 until 1842.
