Stanley Hutzler was the son of John Hutzler (1865-1944) and Bertha Peth (1873-1956.) Bertha was born in Chicago and arrived on South Manitou Island (Michigan) the summer of 1891 with Johnny's visiting niece, coming as the governess of her children. A romance ensued, and Bertha wound up as their great aunt. Bertha's first and only child, Stanley, was born in July of 1899. During Stanley's second year it became apparent that he was ailing, with a problem that seemed to be progressively worsening. Bertha took him to Chicago, seeking professional medical help, but the boy died there on July 5th of 1901 at the home of Bertha's aunt Henrietta (Mrs. Herman Kassin.) Stanley was buried in the Kassin family plot at the Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. Suspicions arose on the island that Stanley had died of injuries sustained when he was trampled by a bull on the family farm, Bertha being blamed for negligence. That became a legend that is still perpetuated even today. In fact (as is clearly shown on Stanley Hutzler's Death Certificate) the boy had died of leukemia, the characteristic swellings and skin blemishes perhaps giving rise to the "bull story."
