Deolinda Baca, age 94, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2000 surrounded by her loving family and sister.
A resident of Santa Monica, CA since 1942, Deolinda was born into an old Spanish family in La Cienega, NM.
Her grandfather, Don Pedro Bautista Pino, was elected in 1810 as the New Mexico Territorial Representative to the Spanish Cortes in Spain. Deolinda's mother, Trinidad Pino de Montoya, was described in a 1975 article in The New Mexican as every inch a grand dame of the old school with her delicate black lace mantilla.
Deolinda was preceded in death by her husband, Amado Baca and parents, Miguel and Trinidad Pino de Montoya, sisters, Celine Vigil, Josephine C de Baca, Elda Montoya, Margaret del Valle and Annabel Cox and brother, Miguel Montoya. Deolinda is survived by her children, Arturo and his wife, Mary of San Rafael, CA, Sylvianna Baca of Santa Monica, CA, Sally Colonna of Lexington, TX and Evangeline Madrid and her husband, Carlos of Bernalillo, her grandchildren, Karla Blaine, Karol Hobbs, Kurtis, Kris and Kevin Colonna, John and Robert Madrid and Shirley Herron, 11 great-grandchildren, sisters, Fita Brown and Amelia Andrews, brother, Antonio Montoya and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends. Deolinda served her country during World War II in the elite group known as "Rosie the Riveter" at San Pedro Naval Ship Yards and later was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital until retiring in 1969. Her retirement was spent dedicating many years of service to her parish Saint Clement's Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Center. Deolinda received recognition for her services to others from the Hispanic Ministry of Los Angeles in 1997 and more recently the Lay Minister Benemerenti Award from Pope John Paul II.
A Memorial Mass was held at St. Clement's Church on June 6, 2000 with six priests concelebrating Mass. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2000 at San José Catholic Church in La Cienega, NM, with Father Ernest Sweeney from Loyola-Marymont University as Celebrant. Interment will follow at San José Cemetery.
