COLRAIN -- Elizabeth G. (Cummings) Avery, 65, of 198 Jacksonville Road, died Monday at home. She was born in Everett on April 26,1937, the daughter of Richard N. and Helen (Wilder) Cummings.
She was a graduate of Wakefield High School and a graduate of New England Baptist School of Nursing. She was employed by the hospital as a registered nurse until her marriage to Kenneth W., at which time she moved to Colrain. She and her husband would have observed their 42nd wedding anniversary on July 23.
During the late 1970s she served as interim school nurse at Mohawk Trail Regional School in Buckland. Avery was a member of the Colrain Community Church, where she was deaconess and Sunday school teacher. She was a former member of the Colrain Snowdrifters Club, the Colrain Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization and the former Colrain Grange. She had also been a Red Cross swimming instructor for the town for several years. She had served as president and treasure of the Massachusetts Jersey Cattle Club as well as breed representative and youth breed representative. She was a former director of the New England Jersey Club. She served on the Massachusetts dairy industry promotion committee and was co-manager of the milk promotion booth at the Massachusetts building at the Big E Eastern Exposition in West Springfield She was also a director of the Massachusetts Farm Bureau and the women's state committee.
Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Craig W. and wife, Michelle R., of Colrain and Thomas R. and wife, Shelley R., of Shelburne; a daughter Robin E. Hartnett and her husband, Timothy J. of Colrain; seven grandchildren, a niece and four nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Colrain Community Church. Burial will be in North River Cemetery. She enjoyed baking, quilting, gardening, square dancing and climbing the rocks of the Maine coastline. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to either Hospice of Western New England, 48 Sanderson St., Greenfield, MA 01301 or the Oncology Department of the Franklin Medical Center, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
