A drowning victim of the Clallam disaster

Although Charles is referred to as "Captain" and "Colonel," no proof has been found of any official military service. Reporters may have confused him with his father, William Thompson, who had a distinguished career as an officer in the Civil War (1st Iowa Cavalry) and in the Indian Wars (7th U.S. Cavalry). Charles may have accompanied his father to military posts and during field campaigns in the late 1860s and early 1870s in some unofficial capacity.
