My great great grandmother Lany Margaret was born in Shells Bush, New York. She was the daughter of George & Polly (Casler) Hilts. Sister of Peter C. Hilts (1829-1910), and Ruth (Hilts) Scullen.
Lany was known to most everyone as Margaret. She married Robert Arnold November 5, 1865 in Little Falls, New York. From this union were 4 childen; Irving Arnold, Catherine (Arnold) Pauth, Addie (Arnold) Beard & Nellie (Arnold) Ludwig.
Lany Margaret was my mother's great grandmother. In April of 2005 when my mother was 86 years young she shared with me precious memories of her childhood growing up in New York.
She remembers her great grandmother Lany Margaret (Hilts) Arnold (1843-1929) well and had fond memories of her. "Old grandma" she refers to her. As a young girl my mother recalls visiting and spending time with her often during the 1920s. A few months before moms 12 birthday her great grandmother Lany Margaret passed away.
Old grandma's house (Lany Margaret), moms favorite place to visit and she did so often. Usually on the weekends on long summer days when school wasn't in session. At this time my mother and her Robbins family lived in Herkimer and East Herkimer, New York. During some of her visits to pass the time she and "old grandma" took walks to town for ice cream. A short distance from the Arnold homestead. Other days they'd take walks together in the green fields and hills located on the back of the large property . At times the hills were blooming with lilacs during their season. They (the Arnold's) had cows. Together my mother and her great grandmother made the best home made cottage cheese and churned butter too. The excess cows milk that the Arnold family didn't comsume was collected in containers and placed on the front porch to be picked up for processing and distribution.
The 2 story Arnold homestead sat upon a hill overlooking a bank leading to the street below. Upon the front entrance was the parlor that was graced with a large picturesque window. Wooden swinging doors from the kitchen's interior led to the dining room. When it rained you could hear the comforting patter of rain drops in the upstairs bedroom where my mother slept. Each bedroom donned a feather bed and feather pillows. She sunk and retired into her's as night fell. Once the beds were made the next morning you couldn't sit on them without disturbing the feathers. If you did you had to fluff it up and make the bed all over again.
One evening mom was amused and entertained while observing the bright full moon in the night sky from the back yard when her uncle Harry Ludwig told a story about the "Man In The Moon" that spooked her younger sister Virginia who was about 7-8 years old at the time.
