Attend Carson-Newman College, Tennessee. He taught in George and came to Texas in 1879. He was superintendent of schools in Weatherford and Mansfield. He became a principal of the high school and then Superintendent in 1891. He was superintendent in Houston. In 1895 he was appointed State Superintendent of Schools. He was president of Southwest Texas Normal School (now Texas State) in San Marcos. After his retirement, he taught math at Sul Ross College and later because superintendent of San Benito, Texas
