Former Santa Cruzan Joseph Manildi, Jet-Missile Instrument Expert, Dead

Former Santa Cruzan Dr. Joseph F. Manildi died Thursday at Los Angeles after an extended illness. He was 44. Services were yesterday.

Raised in Soquel and a 1935 graduate of Santa Cruz High school, Dr. Manildi pursued a career in engineering and was regarded as an expert in the field of jet propulsion aircraft and guided missile instrumentation.

He received B.S.. M S , and Ph. D. degrees in electrical engineering from California Institute of Technology. He later became a full profess or of engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles.

In 1955, Dr. Manildi joined the Ramo-Wooldridge corporation at Los Angeles as a member of the electronic instrumentation staff. Before that he had been director of research and chief engineer at the M. Giannini company, Pasadena.

An honor student when he graduated from SCHS, Dr. Manildi returned to deliver the commencement address for the 1951 graduating class. He was one of of the school's most distinguished graduates.

He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi fraternities.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three children, Steven, Ann, and Laura, all of Los Angeles; his mother, Sarah Manildi of Santa Cruz; three brothers, Albert J. Manildi of Santa Cruz, Raymond Manildi of Los Angeles, and Richard Manildi of Michigan; and two sisters, Eleanor Ware. and Irene Carter, both of Santa Cruz.
