Robert Kirkman and his wife, Mary Lawson Kirkman, with their five children, Robert-ten years, John-eight, Joseph-six, Hyrum-four, and James-two, left their home of Harwood in Lancashire, England, on May 20, 1856 ,to start their eventful journey. After five long weeks aboard the old sailing vessel ''Horizon'', they finally arrived in Boston, thence traveling by rail to Iowa, arriving the last day of June.
