British Victoria Cross recipient. Basil John Douglas Guy was born in Bishop Auckland, in County Durham. During the Boxer Rebellion in China, he served with the Royal Navy as a Midshipman. On the 13th. July 1900, during the attack on Tientsin, an able seaman was shot, about fifty yards short of cover. Midshipman Guy tried to carry the wounded man back to safety, but was unable to lift him, so he bandaged his wound and ran to get help, during which time the enemy concentrated their attack on the pair of them. When the stretchers arrived, he ran out and helped to bring in his comrade; unfortunately, the latter was shot again, and died before they could reach safety. In addition to the Victoria Cross, Basil Guy was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and was, later, promoted to the rank of Commander.
