Clyde Blaine Eller, Feb. 4, 1921 ~ Feb. 26, 2010
Resident of Rossmoor Clyde Blaine Eller died February 26, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. He died with dignity and integrity. Beloved husband to M. Linda Eller for close to 67 years, he was also father, grandfather and devoted friend to many. Clyde was committed to making the world a better place. He lived to see Obama in the White House and his beloved grandchildren pursuing fulfilling careers, engaged and married. A lover of the natural world, he and Linda traveled to many of the national parks around the country, followed the Lewis and Clark trail and traveled throughout parts of Europe, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. He never forgot his Iowa roots, but claimed the Bay Area as his chosen home. He loved to walk, to read the newspaper cover to cover, identify birds of all types, read books of all varieties, sail his beloved sailboat on alpine lakes and participate in engaging conversations with friends. Born in Clarinda, Iowa, he graduated from Iowa State in Engineering. He received his M.A. in Public Health from the University of Michigan. He served the Army for 3 and ½ years during World War II. After working for the Tulsa, Oklahoma Health Department, he joined the United States Public Health Service. At the founding of the Environmental Protection Agency, he was asked to join the staff and served the EPA until he retired in 1981 as Regional Director of the Enforcement Division in San Francisco. He and Linda moved to Rossmoor in 1988. He was for many years active in the Trails Club, The Dance Club, The Democratic Club, The Engineers Club, Kiwanis, and the Committee for Common Concerns. He was charter Co-Chair of the Happy Hackers Golf Club and a member of SIRS and DUO Club. He was an active member of Unitarian Universalist congregations wherever he and Linda lived. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda; a brother Ted Eller; his children and their spouses: David (Abbie), Jim (Jeannie), John (Margy), Janne (Rob); eight grandchildren: Jonah (Kathryn), Ben, Dara (Alan), Jessie (Andy), Matthew, Shaun, Hannah, Sam; and various nieces, nephews, and their children. A memorial service will be held at Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek on March 13th at 3:00pm. Memorial gifts may be made to The Nature Conservancy, The American Heart Association, Mt. Diablo UU Church or California State Parks. The family wishes to thank the ministry of MDUUC, the pastoral care of FUCO, and Vitas Hospice for the care they have provided Clyde.
