The best way I've found to get a clear and readable gravestone photo is to redirect light. I carry a mirror which I set up 90 to the stone, to cast shadows into the carvings. The mirror can be up to 30 feet away (in the case of a shade tree over the stone) and it still works just fine. Compare the two stones in this photo, quite different readability. I put this old mirror on a plywood backing, so I don't bust it as fast as I did my last one. I use a 1" dowel with a rubber chair-foot on one end, to prop it up at whatever angle I need.
