Naturalized at 18 in Columbia Co, NY on 9 Oct 1854.

Graduated in 1861 from Madison University (now Colgate) in Hamilton, New York. Earned A.B. (Bachelor of Arts), DD (Doctor of Divinity), was Phi Beta Kappa (academics honor society) and Salutorian (2nd highest GPA in class).

Married 27 Aug 1861 to Jane E "Jennie" Heermans, daughter of William and Amanda (Gillum). They had three children: George Wills, William M, and Albert Stokes.

He was a Baptist minister all his adult life, and minister at North Avenue Baptist Church in Cambridge from 1 Nov 1869 to 1 Jan 1895.
