Jimmy was known as "Slim" Jim Baker and starting after he got out of the service with the U.S. Army, in the midst of driving tow trucks & working on cars, became an amateur racecar driver and specialized in demolition derbies. He often raced at the now defunct Norwood Arena in Norwood, MA as well as other tracks. His racing number was 108. There are photos of him at www.norwoodarena.com.

Slim Jim Baker had a long career at Norwood Arena, primarily in the Junior Hobby, Dare Devil, Flying Tigers, VW Mini Stocks and Demolition Derbies. Jim's #108 was well known by all.

In 1964 Jim painted his car a different color every week to help raise the spirits of fan and 7 year old friend John Thomas. Jim's most unique paint scheme was a white car with large colored dots. A loaf of "Wonder Bread" was his inspiration

John Thomas was a NASCAR Junior Official at Norwood Arena. He passed away at age 7 from leukemia on August 24, 1964.

Slim Jim Baker won the first Johnny Thomas Memorial Race held on September 5, 1964. This was one of Jim's two victories in the Junior Hobby Division.

Jim was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts and lived in the Boston area for much of his life. He and his family moved to Florida in the 1970's.
