Lessie Fae Baum, age 92, of Cross Plains, Texas, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 in the Bangs Nursing Home. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. at Higginbotham Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 8th at Higginbotham Chapel with Dwaine Clower officiating; burial will follow in the Pioneer Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7th at Higginbotham Chapel in Cross Plains from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Lessie was born to Lila (Mann) and Elzie Teston on January 3, 1920 in Pioneer, Texas. She was the ninth of eleven children. When Pioneer became too rowdy during the oil boom, the Testons moved their family to Ralls, Texas when she was two years old. For health reasons, the family relocated to Hot Springs, NM where she met and married Raymond Lowry in 1943. He was a soldier in WWII and they lived in San Diego, CA and Durham, NC until Raymond went overseas. They had a son, Kenneth Ray Lowry in 1945. Their marriage ended in divorce. She worked in the Cara Tingley Hospital caring for children with polio, with many in iron lungs. She assisted in surgery also.
She, along with her parents and Kenneth, moved back to the Pioneer area in 1949. In April, 1952, she married Jim Baum, a welder in Cross Plains. They resided in Jim's family home, the Coffman house, until 1978, when Jim retired. At that time they moved to their farm, known as Hog Heaven. She was a wife and homemaker and she enjoyed the garden and canning. She was talented in quilting, needle work, and ceramics and sewing. She sewed Barbie clothes by hand and delighted many a little girl with them. Over the years, she has written poetry. She was a caregiver all her life. She and her siblings cared for her aged parents and she cared for Jim for many years following his paralyzing stroke.
Lessie is preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and one sister. She is survived by one sister, Oddie Kivlehen and her son, Kenneth Lowry and daughter in law, Gayle, three grandchildren, Chris Lowry and wife Catherine, Ashia Lowry, and Mat Lowry and wife, Suzanne. Lessie had six great grandchildren and each one was special to her, Anthony Tejeda, Sophia and Madilyn Dominguez, Sydney, Luke and Alyssa Lowry. Family meant everything to Lessie and she leaves many cherished nieces and nephews and cousins. Lessie leaves behind many treasured friends that have been there for her in every way. She loved her church family and was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church since 1949. She was an avid game player and enjoyed playing dominos at the Senior citizens. Since December 2011, she resided in the Rising Star Nursing Home and Bangs Nursing Home where she made many friends.
