James emigrated to New York in 1883 and lived in Manhattan until about 1920. He worked as a "Floor Walker" and a Manager at a Department Store.

His niece Mary (May) Egan emigrated about 1909 and lived with him at least some of the time up to her marriage in 1919, and then definitely lived with him from thereafter.

James was naturalized in 1911 in the Southern District of New York.

Some time after 1920 James bought a couple of houses in Jamaica, Queens and he moved there with May and family.

His niece May is buried with him.
