Mrs. Sue Uhl Brown Passes Away

Mrs. Sue Uhl Brown, was born March 31, 1883 in Millersburg, Maryland and was married to M. W. Brown at Carlinville, Ill., August 12, 1874. There were three born to this home. They are Mr. Robert Uhl Brown of Eufaula, Mrs. Mabel Brodie, Richmond, Va., Mrs. Charles E. Hopes of Enid, OKla.

Mrs. Brown spent the early part of her married life in Douglas, Kansas where she was very active in Sunday school work and the work of the W. C. T. U. being Sunday School Superintendent two years and president of the Douglas local W. C. T. U. six years.

After coming to Oklahoma county, Oklahoma Territory in 1891 she at once became active in the work of organizing and promoting Sunday school work and W. C. T. U. work in the new country, organizing the first rural Sunday school in Oklahoma county east of the capitol and was the superintendent five years.

Then moving to the Sooner community she organized another Sunday school and was the superintendent six years. She organized the Oklahoma County Sunday school association and the Oklahoma county W. C. T. U. and became the Seventh Territorial president of the W. C. T. U.

In 1908 Mrs. Brown with her family moved to Eufaula where she became identified with the Sunday school work of the Methodist church and was one of the best loved and most efficient Sunday school teachers.

Mother Brown was left an orphan when only nine years of age and was adopted by a Mr. Nicholas Bois who gave her the best of advantages in education to be had in those pioneer days.

She was converted when a child and united with the Presbyterian church. There was no Presbyterian church near her Kansas home and there she united with the Congressional Church and after coming to Oklahoma uniting with the Methodist church.

Mother Brown was in poor health the last few years and spent most of her time with her daughter Mrs. Leah Hope of Enid, where she departed from this life May, 27, 1929 to be with Him who she had loved and served so well to hear His words, "Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord."

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church at ten o'clock the morning of May 31, 1929 by her pastor Rev. W. O. Butcher. Mrs. Abbie B. Hillerman Honorary President of the State W. C. T. U. Tulsa Oklahoma also spoke of the work of Mother Brown with the W. C. T. U. that she was truly one of the great women of Oklahoma, her work being done where it counted most.

Her body adorned with the American flag and the white carnations of the State W. C. T. U. resting upon the casket was gently laid to rest beside her companion in the family lot in the Eufaula cemetery.

The mound was completely covered with flowers from the church and many, many friends.
