Lucille was born to Joseph and Katie Fox in Louisville, KY. She had a younger brother, Joe, who was born in 1913 while the family was living in Cleveland, OH. She married James Glover Newman of Cleveland on February 14, 1931 in Grove City, Mercer, Pennsylvania. Tommy was the child they had.
Lucille began divorce proceedings on August 6, 1935 while she and little Tommy were listed as living at 493 East 106th Street, Cleveland, OH. The divorce was finalized on November 18, 1936 with the assistance of her Attorney William A. Weiss.
It is not known when Lucille met then married my Grandfather, Harold Oscar Hillaker, but records reflect it took place shortly after her divorce from James Newman while she was still living in Cleveland, OH.
Harold became stepfather to Lucille's firstborn son, Thomas Franklin Newman who had been born in 1932. Lucille and Harold would become parents to Joyce Kathryn (b.1938, Chicago), Harl Joseph 'Hillman' (b.1939,Chicago) and Alan Austin (b.1941,Los Angeles).
The family is last noted in the 1940 census while living in Chicago. For reasons unknown, Harold oftentimes changed the spelling of his surname and this time is noted as 'Harold Hillman'. They are shown living on East 79 Street in Chicago, the record states that they had resided in Richland, Ohio in 1935 ~ further research needs to be done on that.
Lucille passed away in the summer of 1942 from complications from an infection following another pregnancy. She was buried in GreenLawn Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. Of note, her surname on the death certificate and burial records are noted as 'Hellicker'. Her tombstone was ordered in June 2020 on behalf of her daughter, my Mom. What a beautiful gift...long time coming.
Her children were separated into three different homes: Joyce and Harl remained with their father, Tommy was sent to reside with his biological father, and Alan Austin was adopted by a loving couple in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 1 yrs. It is not known if the adoptive couple were friends of Harold and Lucille. They submitted legal papers to have his named changed to Maechel Ole Patterson.
