Margaret Cooney Hughes

December 12, 1925 - January 1, 2012

SHREVEPORT, LA - Peg Hughes, 86, of Shreveport, LA died after a sudden illness on January 1, 2012, at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center in Ketchum, ID while on Christmas holiday with her family. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at St. Joseph Church, 211 Atlantic Ave. in Shreveport. Officiating will be Fr. Karl Daigle.

Peg was born in Northbridge, MA. She graduated in 1947, as an R.N. from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Worcester, MA. She entered the Navy in 1951 as a LTJG and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. She was also stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Memphis, TN, where she met and married her husband of fifty years, Albert G. Hughes, Jr.

Peg was a member of St. Joseph Church for over 43 years. She loved her sewing group and church circle. Peg was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Peg is survived by her daughter, Karen Hughes Murphy and husband, Alan; sons, Kevin Hughes and wife, Linda Allbritton Hughes, of Dallas, TX and Kelly Hughes and wife, Leisa, of Houston, TX; and her grandchildren, Brooks Murphy, Shannon Harter Payne, Kyle Hughes and wife, Molly, Anna Hughes McArthur and husband, Callem, Sara Hughes, Eva Hughes, and Jonathan Hughes. She is also survived by her sister, Anne J. Cooney, of Worcester, MA; special niece, Cherri Robinson; brother-in-law, Charles Hughes; sisters-in-law, Sally Hughes Woods, Wilda Hughes and Shirley Cooney; and many nieces and nephews.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her parents, Francis and Anna Cooney; grandson, Justin Reid Harter; sister, Joyce C. Saliatello; brother, Daniel Cooney; brothers-in-law, John Hughes and David Hughes; and sister-in-law, Doris Hughes Moseley.

Peg will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, alongside her husband, Albert G. Hughes, Jr., (Cdr. U.S. Navy, Ret.).

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Holy Angels Residential Facility, 10450 Ellerbe Rd., Shreveport, LA 71106 or to St. Joseph Church, 211 Atlantic Ave., Shreveport, LA 71105.
