Salvatore, age 64 was born on March 10, 1884 in Palermo,Sicily, Italy to Augusto and Arcangela ( Vallone) Leto.

He was already a United State's citizen when his soon to be wife Catherine came to the United States with her father when she was 17 years old, In order to get off the boat they had to be sponsored by an American Citizen, Some of Salvatore's close friends heard of this situation and they contacted him because he not only was a citizen of the United States, but also a twenty-seven year old bachelor trying to find an Italian wife.

He became more interested when he was told that this man was accompanied by his beautiful young daughter and they couldn't get off the boat because they had no sponsors.

As soon as Salvatore saw Catherine, it was love at first sight and he knew that she was the one he had been looking for all of his life. She felt the same way about him. There must have been some agreement that if he sponsored them she would marry him with her father's consent. They married later that year and moved to Detroit, Michigan.

Salvatore was very talented, there wasn't anything he couldn't do. He was a shoemaker, barber, carpenter, made beautiful peach stone boxes with mirrors on the inside lids and beautiful ruffles around them also padded inside to place jewelry in, or not padded for sewing boxes and he covered the inside of the boxes with beautiful cotton material. He split the peach stones in half, removed the nut inside and washed them; then painted the stones after he glued them on the boxes that he had made and lacquered them--they were so very beautiful. People would buy them from him, and the demand was high. he also made clothespin baskets and laundry baskets.

On Feb 3, 1953 Salvatore passed away from a brain Aneurysm. it happened unexpectedly and passed away the next day.
