Sylvester "Bess" E. Eppley, 89, of Carlisle and formerly of Duncannon, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Sarah Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle.

Born Oct. 25, 1913, in Carlisle, he was a son of the late Frank Albert and Velva Jane (Finkey) Eppley.

Mr. Eppley attended the Carlisle Commercial College and was a former employee of the Postal Telegraph, where he was a telegraph lineman. He also worked at Reiter's Electric, Hempt Brothers and Middletown Air Depot, Olmsted Field.

He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, Duncannon. He had a life membership with the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers of America Local Union 287, with 56 years of service, and was also a member of Kinkora Pythian Home. He enjoyed polka music, square dancing and hunting in Potter County. He was a world-class traveler, having visited numerous countries around the world with family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, S. Frank Eppley of Duncannon and James A. Eppley of Halifax; a brother, Robert M. Eppley of Carlisle; two sisters, Emmaline C. Brenneman and Virginia I. Buchter, both of Carlisle; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Helen M. Eppley; three brothers, Thomas D. Eppley, Oscar M. Eppley and Paul M. Eppley; and two sisters, Zelda L. Rhone and Ruth W. Thoman.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home, 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, with the Rev. Darrell R. Justh officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
