WORKMAN AT BASS FOUNDRY KILLED BY FALLING CRANE
JUSTIN L. EVARD CRUSHED WHEN ACCIDENT OCCURS AND DIES SOON AFTERWARD AT HOPE HOSPITAL.
Justin L. Evard, fifty-four years old and living on McCulloh street, was caught between a heavy crane and a car at the Bass Foundry and Machine company's plant just before noon today and sustained injuries from which he died at Hope hospital a couple of hours later. He was in charge of a crew that was transferring a heavy casting from one car to another in which the crane was being used and one of the guy ropes broke allowing the crane to topple over.

The full weight fell upon the right chest and shoulder crushing the body badly. Evard was unconscious when he was released by the other workman. He was rushed to the hospital and physicians worked hard with him in an effort to save his life but the chest walls were crushed in the shoulder broken and the ribs fractured.

Evard had been employed at the plant for a number of years and was a foreman over a gang of laborers in one of the yards. He is married and has a family of children all of whom are grown. Little hope of saving his life was entertained from the first but heroic efforts were made under the direction of the officers of the company.

The deceased was born in Washington township, and had been a resident of Allen county all this life. He came to Fort Wayne six years ago from Jefferson township, where he was engaged in farming. Since coming here he has been employed at the Bass foundry. He is survived by a widow and seven children- Alfred, Charles, Marie, Bertha and Ida Evard, and Mrs. C. Telgmann, all of this city; four sisters, Mrs. Thomas Doyle, of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Peter Montavy, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Sophia Lemon, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Joseph Giant, Jefferson township, and one brother August Evard, of Omaha, Neb.
