Mr. Frederick Andrew Barger, 72, of Icard, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Carolina Rehab of Burke, after a period of declining health.
Mr. Barger was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Catawba County to the late Lon and Gladys Williams Barger. Fred was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, a React team member and a former disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the American Legion Post #16 of Newton. He retired as a highway inspector with the NCDOT after many years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Lee Barger, and two brothers, Floyd T. and Larry Wayne Barger.
Surviving is his wife, Edna Stephens Barger of the home; a son, Timothy A. Barger and wife, Jenny of Maiden; a daughter, Judy Ballard and husband, Alan of Denver; two brothers, Howard Barger and Donald Barger Sr., both of Newton; and two sisters, Dorothy Mauser and Hilda Barger, both of Hickory. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Ashley Barger, Paige Barger and Jessika Barger; two grandsons, Brandon Frye and Bobby Ballard; one great-grandson, Blake Frye; and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Keener.
The Barger family received friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post # 234 of Valdese following in the Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Shepherd officiated and Mr. Barger's nephews served as pall bearers.
