Charles "Charley" Prchal was born and raised in Sound Beach, New York. He graduated from Earl L Vandermeulen High School in 1967. Charley enlisted in the U. S. Army and was sent to Vietnam in 1969 as a Spec 4 in the 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Cavalry. While covering members of his patrol as they climbed back onto a helicopter during combat operations, he lost his life to enemy fire. Charley was killed 22 days after his 20th birthday. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal and Purple Heart for gallantry in action. Bright, mature and energetic he would have been a pillar of the community had he survived. It is a pity that he was lost.
