His given name according to family research was Agrippa "Greppie" Parinola "Perno" Lafayette Allen. But all documents show him as G.P. or Grippie Allen.

Grippie enlisted as a private on September 15, 1864, at White Plains, Alabama, in Company B, Hardie's Battalion, Alabama Calvary Reserves. He was wounded at Blue Mountain, Alabama about April 15, 1865. The wound eventually led to him losing his right leg. He was paroled May 1, 1865 at Oxford, Alabama.

He lived in Tennessee for a period of time and was added to the pensioners in Tennessee in 1904. He later moved back to Alabama and in October 1923, began receiving Alabama Confederate Pension No. 3164
