Birth date on headstone is 29 May 1805. However, I have seen the date as early as 1796 to 1807.

THIS IS NOT OUR SAMUEL but I think this is where the birth date of 1796 comes from:

1841 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Census: Samuel Hardcastle, butcher (45) born 1796; Elenor Hardcastle (40; Anne Hardcastle (20); Jane Hardcastle (6). No relationships are shown on 1841 census.

This is our Samuel: 1841 Ripon, Yorkshire, England census:
Samuel Hardcastle, staymaker (35) and wife Hannah Hardcastle (35). Children: Sarah Hardcastle (14); Eliza Hardcastle (7); Hannah Hardcastle (5); Elizabeth Hardcastle (1). All born in Yorkshire.
