A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2011 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for Alvin Joseph Chappuis, Sr., who died at 5:12 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2011 at his residence in Crowley.
Fr. Gary Schexnayder will celebrate the Mss and the Committal services at the Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 8:00 a.m. until service time. The Rosary will be at 5:00 p.m. Sunday.
Alvin Joseph Chappuis, Sr. was born March 11, 1918 in Rayne, Louisiana. After graduation from Rayne High School, a summer job was offered in Crowley at the International Rice Mill. However, due to the depression, the summer job lasted six years. In October of 1941, he married Thelma Fogleman and they continued to live in Crowley until June 1942 when he enlisted as a flying cadet. Training was in Santa Ana, California and Tucson, Arizona.
In June 1945, he was honorably discharged from the Air/Sea Rescue Unit in Gulfport, Mississippi. The couple moved to Lake Charles where he worked for Lykes Bros. Steamship Company as Wharf Superintendent on the docks, and then in the main office for three and a half years. After this time, he was asked to represent Lykes in the rice area and to again live in Crowley. All of his time was consumed handling traffic and sales with some thirty rice mills and brokers. His sales area later covered all of the state except for New Orleans and concerned all products exported or imported. He retired in March of 1980 after 34 years with Lykes. He spent his retirement enjoying time with his children and grandchildren. He spent many hours restoring and repairing antique clocks and furniture. Al dedicated his life to the community and demonstrated in many ways his deep and genuine love for the people of the city.
Al and Thelma received numerous awards for their service and dedication to the Church and the community including the Bishop's Medal in 1991, Outstanding Citizens of Crowley in 1992, and the Msgr. Sigur Service Award in 1998.
Al was a member of St. Michael Parish Church where he was a Eucharistic minister. He has served on the St. Michael Parish Council serving as President and member of the Social Committee.
Al was a long-time member of the Serra Club of Acadia Parish. He served as Vocations Chairman and received Serran of the Year.
He worked for 12 years on the Crowley Cleanest City Committee and the Crowley Beautification Committee which was responsible for many of the colorful plantings in the parks and along the streets. He was a member of the Crowley Town Club where he worked on the Decorations Committee for the Mardi Gras Ball for many years.
Al was instrumental in establishing the Crowley Christian Care Center. He spent many hours sorting, repairing, and refinishing donated toys and other items to be distributed and sold at CCCC garage sales. He was responsible for securing the present location of CCCC. Funds derived from Christian Care are used to buy food, medications, and other items to assist the needy in the community.
Survived by his wife of 70 years, Thelma Fogleman Chappuis; children Kay C. George and her husband Guy of Gainesville, TX; Carol C. LeBlanc and her husband Michael of Crowley, Renee C. Vondenstein and her husband, William of Crowley; Alvin Chappuis, Jr. of Denham Springs; and Annette C. Stelly and her husband Frank of Iota. He was proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 12 great grand children.
