From Der Nord Westen, 21 Dec. 1893:
Death on Sun. of another old resident of our city, Mr. J.A. Todl. He was
born in Bohemia and came here in 1852, living in Manitowoc ever since. He
held the post of City Marshal two times. He was quite ill over the last
year and a cerebral stroke brought his life to an end on Sunday. Burial
took place Tues. in the city cemetery.
*******
A.J. Todl of this city died on Sunday afternoon from a stroke of
paralysis. He was
about 75 years of age and was one of the early settlers of Manitowoc. When he
came here he started a saloon near the Catholic church on the corner
where Pfeffer's
now is. He kept bar at various places and always commanded a good trade as he
was something of an epicure and never failed to have something good to serve.
Some years ago he became reduced in circumstances and has been a city
charge since.
