Velma Lee Atkins, 84, passed away on Wednesday the 27th of October after a short illness.

A service to celebrate the life of Velma will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 in the chapel of Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, next to her beloved husband, Bobby Joe Atkins. Services will be conducted by Pastor Mike Durbin. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David Atkins, Brad Humphries, Chad Humphries, Rollie Richardson, Kyle Bennett and Daren Henson. Honorary pallbearers are Billy and Kenneth Vaughn, Terry Thurmond, Rollie Cannon III, Phil Thedford, Bill Giles, John Towles and Paul Merritt.

Velma (Sister) was born Dec. 18, 1925, at Roosevelt, Okla., to the late Maudie and Rollie Cannon Sr. Velma moved to Tyler at a young age and later married the love of her life, Bobby Joe Atkins on Aug. 18, 1950. Bobby passed away after only a few years of marriage, after which Velma raised their three beautiful children of which she was so proud. While raising her family, she worked at Thompson Hills Nursery, making new and close friends, always lending a helping hand with the plants they wanted and a big friendly smile, she will be missed.

Velma was preceded in death by two brothers, Rollie Jr. and Donald Eugene Cannon; and one sister, Joyce Fay Cannon; along with her parents.

Velma is survived by two sons, Karl (Dusty) Atkins and his wife Lisa of Austin and Mark Shawn Atkins and wife Shelly of Tyler; one daughter, Lisa Jo Atkins of Tyler; five sisters and their husbands, Wanda and Bill Vaughn of Big Sandy, Lois and Bill Humphries of Tyler, Margret and the late Edward Richardson of Metarie, La., Glenda and Ben Weaver of Tyler and Karen and Dean Hanson of Tyler. She had seven grandchildren, Anessa Morgan, Shawn Joe David Atkins, Gary Palmerez, Samantha Sanchez, Anthony Sanchez, Brandi Knippa and Courtney Dent; and five precious great-grandchildren, Savannah Knippa, Wyah Knippa, Dayla Blue Dent, Cierra Morgan and Kaitlin Morgan. Velma also had a special friend, whom she thought of as her other daughter, Christie Atwood of Tyler.
