Maria went by her middle name Mina, or the nickname Minnie. She was the daughter of Napoleon Ponton and Emelie Mildred "Milley" Baker. She grew up in and around the Carr Settlement in Branch township, Mason county, Michigan.
On October 26, 1899, in Troy, Newaygo county, Michigan, Minnie married George Halsal, a son of David Halsal and Mary Hicks. At the time of the marriage Minnie was 12 years old, George was 33. Minnie's father had died in January 1897 and by 1899 her widowed mother was destitute without the necessary means to care for her four children. Wishing the best for her daughter Minnie, she gave her permission for Minnie and George to marry.
During the years 1900-1907 Minnie gave birth to four children: George Jr., Ray, Georgia, and Vera.
George and Minnie were married nearly 18 years. Their marriage ended with George's accidental death at age 51 in the railway yard at Mackinaw City, Michigan. He was employed as a flagman by the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway and was killed when he got caught between two cars and both legs were severed.
Upon her husband's death, Minnie began going by the name Mina P. Having just turned 30 years old, she was destitute and unable to raise her four children. She gave up her two sons George Jr. and Ray for adoption. Her mother Mildred kept Mina's two daughters for a while before turning them over to a convent.
About 1920 Mina took back her two daughters, Georgia age 15 and Vera age 13, and began raising them again.

They lived in Washtenaw county throughout their 37-year marriage, first in Dexter until 1944, and from then on in Chelsea. They were members of the United Methodist Church in Chelsea.
After Frank's death in January 1966 at age 68, Mina remained in her Chelsea home. Her widowed daughter Georgia moved in with her to care for her.
Mina P. Bishop died at age 92. At the time of her death she was a resident of the Whitehall Convalescent Home, 3370 E. Morgan Road (in Pittsfield township), Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Mina was survived by her daughter Mrs. Georgia Pontney of Ypsilanti, a daughter-in-law Mrs. Marie Halsal of Howell, five granddaughters, many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Three of her children preceded her in death, George Halsal Jr., Raymond G. Halsal, and Vera Halsal VanKleek preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Monday August 20, 1979, at 1:00 p.m. at the Staffan Funeral Home in Chelsea, Michigan. The Rev. Marvin H. McCallum officiated. Minnie was buried next to her husband Frank Bishop in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pontiac.
