John was the son of Joseph Balling and his wife Abi. His father Joseph was a German immigrant. He was married twice. His first wife was Cora (Lott) Balling. They were the parents of two daughters. After Cora's death in 1938, he married a widow, Anna M. (Moon) Frey. They were married on September 4, 1942 For some unknown reason his birth year on his headstone is 1 year off. It should be 1894 instead of 1893. He was the half brother of Sara J Atkinson and the full brother of Mary (Balling) Franklin.
