John was born April 4, 1920 in Ft. Sheridan, Illinois to John Pierce Beeson Sr. and Elizabeth Matilda Horne.
He graduated from West Point in 1942 and spent the following 25 years traveling throughout the US and overseas working as a civil engineer in the Army. He received an MS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1947. Highlights of his Corps of Engineers career included the construction of Cape Canaveral launch pads in 1958, which started the Space Race and led to placing the first man on the moon; and in 1962, his involvement in the huge NORAD defense center built inside Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, CO.
After retiring from the Army in 1967, the family moved to Austin. He worked for the Texas Water Development Board and Brown & Root, before starting with the University of Texas System as the chief of construction inspection. Upon retiring from UT in 1984, John worked with the American Arbitration Association and spent a good deal of time doing genealogy research. He was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, serving as junior and senior warden, chalice bearer and many other volunteer activities.
