World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He was a Scottish volunteer, serving as a Lieutenant in C Battery 63rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. At Gonnelieu France, on November 20, 1917, his battery was reduced to five and were surrounded by German infantry during an attack. He continued firing his guns by swinging the trails close together, with the men running and loading from gun to gun. In action for eight hours firing the whole time, he inflicted severe casualties on the enemy. Then, owing to the exhausted state of his men, he withdrew when the infantry supports arrived, taking all essential gun parts and all wounded. For extreme gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and promoted Captian.
