|Tobe LeGrand, Constable of Byron, California 1896. |
There is no actual marker for Tobe LeGrand's grave but this is the area where he is buried, according to the Union Cemetery Admin and ECC County Historians. There is a stone toward the bottom of the picture for reference.
It is located on the old side of the Union Cemetery, west of the pumphouse.
According to ECC Historians, the grave marker for Tobe LeGrand keeps 'sinking' into the ground until the next time it is found. I am assuming this is related to the weather and soil conditions.
It was also said that Constable LeGrand helped injured passengers during a horrific train wreck in Byron in 1902, when the train, The Owl Limited, headed for Los Angeles from Oakland developed a leaking boiler, causing escaping steam. LeGrand was seeing clambering over the tangled mound of iron and steel to carry a child to safety.
