New York – Dec 29 – Mrs Emma L Morgan Woman's National Doubles Tennis Champion in 1891, died today in her Manhattan apartment.

She was the widow of William F Morgan, Sr, former Board Chairman of the Merchants Refrigerating Company. She was married to William F Morgan in 1855.

Mrs Morgan served as President of the YWCA of New York from 1917 to 1923 and had been a Director since 1912. She was chairman in 1913 of the large fund-raising program which resulted in the obtaining of three million dollars, some of which was used to erect Central Club for Nurses, later renamed Morgan Hall in honor of Mrs Morgan.

She was an expert sportswoman and in addition to her skill in tennis, won many trophies as a member of the Metropolitan Golf Team. She won the National Doubles Tennis Championship with Mabel Esmond Cahill as her partner.

Mabel Esmonde Cahill (1863–1905) was an Irish female tennis player, active in the late 19th century, and was the first foreign woman to win a major tennis tournament when she won the 1891 US National Championships.

Born 2 April 1863, Ballyragget, County Kilkenny, Ireland, Cahill won the Orange Club ladies championship in 1890 and 1891.[1][2]

Cahill became the first foreign woman to win a major tournament when she defeated Ellen Roosevelt in the 1891 US Championships women's final at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.[3] She successfully defended her women's singles title in 1892[4] and also won the women's doubles title with Adeline McKinlay and the mixed doubles title with Clarence Hobart. She did not defend her titles in 1893.[5] She died on 1 January 1905 in Ireland.

In 1976, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame
