Elizabeth Susan Pennell was born 19 March 1834 in Reading Township, Perry County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Joshua Pennell (1800-1864) and Elizabeth Ann Saunders (1798-1885). Her father was a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Maryland. Joshua and Elizabeth Ann had lived in Pennsylvania and possibly Virginia before moving to Ohio. Elizabeth Susan was the youngest surviving child of the large family. Two younger siblings died as young children.

By 1830 the family was in Reading, Perry County, Ohio and lived there until about 1836 when they moved to Chatham, Licking County. Elizabeth was born during the time her parents lived in Perry County. Joshua and Elizabeth lived in Licking into the 1840s and then moved to Wayne County, where Elizabeth Susan was listed with them in the 1850 census. Joshua then moved the family to Delaware County, Ohio where his son William lived. Elizabeth Susan was again with her parents in the 1860 census of Delaware County.

Lizzie married James W Kirkpatrick (1833-1874) in 1861. James served in Company D 20th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He was discharged for disability in 1863. He was born in Delaware County. Lizzie and James were in Orange Township, Delaware County in the 1870 census. They they moved to Olathe, Kansas. James died there on 11 April 1874.

In 1875 she met the widowed Daniel Waddell (1823-1900) of Marion County, Ohio. Daniel's first wife, Celia Richardson, had also died in 1874 and he was taking an extended trip to the West. Daniel and Lizzie Pennell Kirkpatrick married in Ohio on 1 May 1875. Raised on a farm, Daniel was a hardware merchant with a store in Westfield.

Elizabeth, who taught school prior to her first marriage, was an accomplished artist. A biographical sketch of Daniel Waddell stated that Elizabeth excelled at portraits. The 1900 census lists her as a crayon artist. Daniel died in 1900. He and Elizabeth are both buried in Lot 8 of Lust Section 71 in Marion Cemetery.
