"Uncle John, Faithful Servant of BJ Hoole. Died 1883"

marker just outside brick edge of Hoole plot where Lt James Lingard Hoole is interred.

No doubt that John was a freed slave who chose to stay with the family after the war. Though known to them as simply "Uncle John", he would have certainly also carried the same last name. They loved him enough to bury him with the family.
