Hugh Barr Laird came with his parents, James and Ann who were both natives of Scotland, to Bradford, Iowa, in 1857. He was a resident since that time, for a period of more than 68 years.

Hugh served in the Civil War with the 4th Iowa Cavalry, as did his brothers Andrew and John. He enlisted as a Private on 28 Dec 1863 at the age of 21. Mustered in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry on the same day as his enlistment. Mustered out 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. Hugh's brother, Andrew, was wounded in action at Ripley, Mississipi and died of his wounds 13 Jun 1864.

Hugh married Alleta Brooks on November 5, 1867. To this union were born five children: Luna Eldora (md1 Bartsch and md2 Smith), Nolan and Carol (both died at a young age), Clio Mildred (Grawe) and Otho Rowland.

Hugh was an active member of the community, serving as mayor for several terms, councilman a number of different times, and a member of the board of education for many years. He was also an active member of Geo. W. Dodge Post #132 G.A.R.

After the death of his wife in 1911, Hugh made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Luna Smith. He died at the age of 82 years after an extended illness.
