U.S. Congressman. He had learned the tailor’s trade, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and commenced to practice law in Taylorsville, Tennessee. Appointed Postmaster of Taylorsville by President Fillmore and he was a Major of the 1st Battalion of Tennessee Militia and was member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1859-63). During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, (1863-64). After his Union service time, he was delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1864, delegate to the Tennessee State constitutional convention, in 1865 and was known as the people’s Judge of the first judicial circuit of Tennessee, in 1865. In 1867, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1879-85) and elected to the Fiftieth Congress, serving (1887-89). After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 75.
