Florence — A memorial service for Ben A. Maynard, Sr., widower of Georgia Metropol Maynard, will be at 4:00pm, Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the Chapel of First Baptist Church, Simpsonville, SC. Visitation will follow immediately after the service. Memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association, SC Chapter, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5001, Greenville, SC 29601. Cain Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mr. Maynard, Sr., 90, long time resident of Simpsonville, SC, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in Darlington. He was born March 11, 1917, in Florence, SC, to the late Judge B. H. and Lottie Allen Maynard.
He was a long time member of Simpsonville First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He went with his church on over 40 mission trips building and rebuilding in many parts of our country and in Brazil. Mr. Maynard was a graduate of Clemson University and served in the European Theater during WWII. He was a Golden Gloves boxer in his youth and a co-founder of the Golden Strip Runners Club who ran foot races into his 70s. He was a Rotarian for over 50 years and served on the Simpsonville Town Council. Ben had owned a home improvement business.
Ben and his late wife, Georgia Metropol Maynard, were married for 52 years. Those left behind to cherish his memory include children, Rev. Ben (Kay) Maynard of Florence, George (Lynn) Maynard of Simpsonville, and Kathy (David) Chamlee of Easley; grandchildren Charlie, Matt, Andy, Haley, Blake, Amy, Michael, Lauren, Will and Mara; great-grandson, Damian; sister, Julia Gresham of Simpsonville.
Ben was always gratified by a task done well, and he never met a pie he didnt like!
