Family History by John B Akers

Maude Hope Thompson was born October 11, 1893 in Thornton, Texas, daughter of John Alexander Thompson and Lola Helen Berry of Limeston, Texas. Hope married her schoolmate J B Akers from Richland, Texas in 1914. The Akers had two sons J.B. Jr and James Hogan while in Clint, Texas. The Akers had farmed land in southern Texas inherited from Mr. Akers father. Unfortunately the Akers lost the farm due to a bank panic and a banker ran off with all his money. Losing his money, the Akers could not pay his note and lost his land in 1921. Soon afterward her husband landed a job as a ditch rider in Garfield, New Mexico. In 1924 the Akers and a son Robert found his way to Las Cruces as a ditch rider. The family later moved up a ways to Hatch because of the milk producers were convenient to the new venture of cow farming. Later they bought a farm with a milk barn and ran a grocery store. All their children went to Hatch High School. Hope lived for many years and had illness that required care and had to spend time with her daughter Nedra in Kingman Arizona before returning to New Mexico.
