Mildred worked along side Velt in the canneries in Campbell to help support their growing family. She became a member of the Campbell Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1937 and was very active in the Dorcas Society, the community services of the church, mending clothing and making quilts to give to those in need. Later in life she worked as a nurse's aide for a convalescent home in Cupertino, California and also worked as a private caregiver for the elderly. She was a good example to her children and everyone she came in contact with. Her family will miss her very much.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Roosevelt Shelton, her son James Vern Shelton, her son T.R. Shelton, her son William Eugene Shelton, and her granddaughter, Debbie Shelton. She is survived by her daughter Leah Novakovich from Saratoga, CA, her daughter Lynn Bedford from Keene, Texas, her son Dennis Shelton from Cupertino, CA, her daughter Sue Freligh from Sonora, CA, and her daughter Sarah Karcich from Salinas, CA. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 20 great-great grandchildren. Her funeral will be Sunday, October 16, 2011 with visitation beginning at 3 p.m. and the memorial service at 3:30 p.m. at the Campbell Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 600 West Campbell Avenue, Campbell, CA with the reception following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011 at Los Gatos Memorial Park, 2255 Los Gatos – Almaden Road, San Jose, CA.
