Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. He served as a Sergeant in Company E, 17th Michigan Infantry, Union Army. On May 12, 1864, he captured Colonel Barker, commanding officer of the Confederate Brigade that charged the Union position at Spotsylvania, Virginia. On the same day he rescued Lieutenant George W. Harman of his regiment from the enemy. For bravery and courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 27, 1896.
