David Cunningham,a Revolutionary war veteran and son of John Cunningham of Spencer, MA, came west with many others from the New England states after the Revolution. Some had received or purchased Bounty Lands in search of adventure, a new start, or simply more fertile soil than found in their rocky New England homeland.
With his wife Elizabeth Beal and eight children David is first listed as a resident of Richfield in Otsego county NY in 1800, when he was 52 years old.
The cemetery he was buried in in the spring of 1818 at the age of 70 was once near a Congregational church, suggesting an affiliation with that denomination.
Many of his children stayed in the area and raised their families in this part of central NYS.
