Capt. Goldberg was the third Rabbi to ever serve in the US Navy, and the first in World War II. More information can be found at his Wikipedia page.

Navy, Capt. Service: WWI. Rabbi. Daughter: Natasha Tall of Ithaca, N.Y., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Served as a private in the Russian Army. He served with the United States Army in artillery units in Europe during World War I. He studied at the Jewish Institute of Religion in Manhattan and became rabbi of the Astoria Center of Israel in 1926. Rabbi Goldberg became a chaplain in the Navy in 1942 and rose to the rank of captain in the Third Naval District in 1951mmanding all religious officers stationed in New York, Connecticut and part of New Jersey. He was the first rabbi to be commissioned a Navy chaplain and the first to be named chaplain of a Navy district.
