Helen W. Allen, 96, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, in Southwestern Nursing Center. Born Dec. 8, 1914, in Forward Township, Elizabeth, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Speers Wiegel and Maude Emilie Sutter Wiegel. She was a member of the Bethesda United Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, a member of the choir there for many years as well as a member of the Woman's Association, the Mizpah Bible Class and the Memorial Committee. Mrs. Allen graduated from Slippery Rock State Teachers College in 1936 with a B.S. degree in health and physical education and all sciences. While there, she played on their Women's Field Hockey Team. After coaching girls' basketball and teaching at Shenango High School, Mrs. Allen returned to her alma mater Elizabeth High School to teach girls physical education and health and coach girls' basketball. During her 34 years of teaching health and physical education at Elizabeth Forward High School she also was a cheerleader coach, Athletic Association sponsor and produced many gymnastic shows. A member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Allegheny County Retired Teachers Association and the AARP Clairton Hill Chapter No. 2862, Mrs. Allen was a member of the Woman's Club of Elizabeth for more than 66 years and had served a term as its president. Mrs. Allen had many interests and after retirement in 1976 from the Elizabeth Forward School District, she enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, many macrame designs, oil painting and china painting over the years. She was a member of the Pittsburgh Porcelain Artists Club and the Pennsylvania Federation of China Painters. Mrs. Allen enjoyed baking and had the reputation of being a good baker. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Daniel E. Allen; sister, Thelma Wiegel; and brothers, Robert S. Wiegel and Eugene Wiegel.
