US Congressman. Born in Nashville, North Carolina, he attended the University of North Carolina, graduated from Yale University Law School and was a lawyer in private practice at Nashville, North Carolina. During World War I, he served in the United States Naval Aviation Flying Corps in 1918 and after the war, he resumed the practice of law. In 1934, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Edward W. Pou and reelected to the next sixteen succeeding Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1966. He also was a delegate, at the Interparliamentary Conferences at Cairo, Egypt, in 1947, at Rome, Italy, in 1948 and chairman of the Committee on Agriculture. He died at age 77 in Wilson, North Carolina.
